March 22, 2020 Update from Pastor Glen & Lauri Egertson
As we all face the new challenges posed by COVID-19, here’s a brief status report from your local Lutheran Bible camps, El Camino Pines and Luther Glen Farm.
First, at both camps, our highest priority is the health and safety of the congregations that support us, our guests and our staff. Our faithful Board of Directors voted last week to shutdown our camps and quarantine our staff through Easter. We will continue to follow the advice of state and local officials and the CDC. Sadly, we are unable to welcome any visitors at this time.
Now, we are faced with a devastating financial situation. We have closed during our busiest season, and we have no clear date when groups will be willing or able to come to camp after we reopen. As of now, we are preparing for summer camp. We continue to recruit, interview and hire summer camp counselors, SIT’s and summer interns.
By far, the hardest part of reacting to this pandemic has been the changes to our year round staff. Just three weeks ago, we had almost two dozen full and part time employees. Salaries are our largest expense, and every single valuable staff member at LRCC has either been furloughed or taken a large pay cut. Every unnecessary expense has been eliminated.
We are honored by the trust that thousands of adults and parents place in us each year; maintaining that trust is a sacred mission. The LRCC Board of Directors are wise and faithful Christians who will guide our camps through the COVID-19 era, and beyond. Please keep us in your prayers!
We’ve posted a video about hand washing and will have an online campfire every week… the link is below. It’s our way of helping you reassure your children and grandchildren that the coronavirus is not forever, but God’s love is. Children, especially, need to hear that message over and over again. In this season, Cleanliness truly is an expression of Godliness!
